If your child is starting to lose their baby teeth, or they have lost a baby tooth too early, a dental space maintainer may be needed. At Busciglio Smiles, we can help your child retain a beautiful smile through the use of these highly effective dental appliances.
A dental space maintainer is a dental appliance that is placed in the mouth to create a space where a tooth used to be or should be. There are two types of space maintainers: fixed and removable. A space maintainer will help keep the rest of the teeth properly aligned and will also provide space for a permanent tooth to come in for children who lost a baby tooth.
Ideally, a child will lose a baby tooth right before the permanent replacement tooth is about to come in. But sometimes, this doesn’t happen. The baby tooth might naturally fall out too soon, or sometimes baby teeth are knocked out in an accident or mishap. Without a tooth in that spot, the rest of the teeth will start to shift and can become misaligned.
Additionally, some children simply never develop all 32 adult teeth that would normally grow. This can also cause problems with adjacent teeth moving and shifting.
Busciglio Smiles wants to set up your child with dental success and space maintainers can be a valuable tool towards this end. Dental space maintainers prevent teeth from shifting and coming in crooked when a baby tooth is lost too soon. If left untreated, that extra space in the mouth can cause long-term problems. Benefits of a space maintainer include:
Teeth that come in crooked can put stress on the rest of the teeth as well as the jaw. This means the teeth are more likely to crack or have other issues. Chewing and speaking can become more difficult with crooked teeth and a misaligned bite. A space maintainer can be incredibly valuable in preventing long-term problems caused by missing baby teeth.
A fixed dental space maintainer is called “fixed” because it is not removable (except by the dentist). Fixed space maintainers are sometimes bonded to the adjacent tooth or teeth. Other fixed space maintainers utilize a crown made out of stainless steel to secure the space maintainer. Then, a wire loop is utilized to maintain the space left by the missing baby tooth.
The benefits of fixed space maintainers are that they cannot be removed or easily fidgeted with. This is often the best solution for younger children, who might be more prone to remove and break a removable space maintainer.
Removable Pediatric Space Maintainers
Removable space maintainers can and should be removed by the child for daily cleaning. These custom dental appliances utilize a bar or false tooth to keep the space open. We will provide home care instructions for these space maintainers. They tend to be a better option for older or more mature children because they can be taken out.
