Reduce your child’s risk of cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease with routine dental cleanings.
Would you like to improve your child’s chances of a healthy smile? Preventative oral health measures such as routine teeth cleanings can save you and your child a lot of grief in the long run. Our Busciglio Smiles location in Plant City provides effective and gentle dental cleanings to prevent cavities and improve oral health for your child.
Routine dental cleanings are a critical part of maintaining good oral health. Due to the foods we eat, our teeth naturally build up plaque and tartar, sticky, hard substances that adhere to teeth. The plaque and tartar buildup attracts bacteria, which eat away at tooth enamel and irritate gums.
During a routine dental cleaning, we remove the plaque and tartar buildup that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease.
A pediatric teeth cleaning at Busciglio Smiles includes an examination and checkup to identify any potential issues. We start with a dental exam.
A thorough oral examination is performed at each pediatric dental cleaning appointment. If it is the first appointment or a yearly examination, X-rays and other digital images may be taken to see what is going on inside the mouth.
Teeth: Teeth are evaluated for tooth decay, chips and cracks, alignment, and any other issues.
Gums: Children can get gum disease for a variety of reasons, so we examine the gums for any signs of inflammation or gum recession.
Soft tissues: The tissues surrounding the teeth and gums can sometimes present with issues, so we examine them to look for any potential inflammation, irritation, lesions, or cysts.
Oral cancer screening: While children are a low risk of oral cancer compared to adults, it is still important to check them at least once per year for any signs of oral cancer.
Orthodontic evaluation: The dentist will assess the alignment of the teeth and jaw, especially incoming teeth, to proactively identify any issues.
Once the dental exam is complete, our skilled dental hygienist will gently scrape away any plaque and tartar buildup on the teeth and around the gumline. Once tartar has formed on the teeth, it can only be removed by a professional, so it is essential to bring your child in at least twice per year for their routine dental cleanings in Plant City.
After the cleaning is complete, the teeth will be polished with a non-abrasive toothpaste and then flossed.
In some cases, we may recommend fluoride treatment for your child. Fluoride is a safe mineral that helps to strengthen tooth enamel. It’s a great way to prevent cavities.
To ensure the best prognosis for your child’s oral health, we always teach children how to properly brush and floss. Our dental hygienist will demonstrate to your child how to use a toothbrush and how best to use dental floss. Brushing and flossing can even turn into a fun game, which can help make dental hygiene enjoyable for your child. Once your child is old enough to brush their own teeth, they should brush at least twice per day and floss at least once per day.
We will also talk to you, the parent, about your child’s oral health habits to see what we can help improve. We’re very interested in finding out about any potential bad habits such as thumb sucking or chewing on pencils. These habits can be mitigated through the use of habit-breaking dental appliances. We may also recommend dietary changes (less sugar!) to help improve your child’s oral health.
As your local pediatric dentist, we are proud to be a part of your healthcare team. We are dedicated to working with you to ensure your child has the best outcome with their oral health. Have any questions? Please let us know.
