Orthodontic treatment from a Plant City orthodontist is a great way to get a smile you love. With various orthodontic treatment options, we can help you get a beautiful, straight smile that functions optimally. The better your teeth and jaw joints fit together, the more comfortable you will be – now and into the future.

Why Invest in Orthodontics in Plant City?

One of the main reasons patients want to invest in orthodontic treatment is to get a straighter, more aesthetically pleasing smile. And we love that we’re able to provide them with that.

However, another important reason why we encourage patients to proceed with orthodontic treatment in Plant City is that it can help improve their oral health.

Orthodontic treatment encourages proper alignment of the teeth and jaw. Not only does this promote good health and function of these structures, but it also prevents muscle, tendon, jaw joint, and ligament tension and pain.

Additionally, correcting bite (occlusion) misalignment ensures balanced bite pressure, which can reduce your risk of:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Cracks in your teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Fractured teeth

Treatment at Any Age

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children are seen for an orthodontic evaluation no later than age seven. By examining a child’s occlusion at an early age, we can identify potential issues that, if treated right away, can prevent more complex and costly issues down the road.

There is a multitude of advantages of early orthodontic treatment, such as ensuring there’s adequate space for erupting adult teeth, correcting misalignment that can cause permanent damage, and reducing the risk of tooth impaction. Early treatment can also help us avoid having to extract adult teeth for future orthodontic treatment.

At Busciglio Smiles, we comply with AAO standards and treat children as young as seven years of age.

Orthodontics in Plant City for Adults

Children aren’t the only ones who can benefit from orthodontic treatment. Adults can and should consider such treatment. Doing so can help ease or prevent pain from TMJD (temporomandibular joint disorder, or jaw joint disorder), caused primarily by bite/jaw misalignment.

At Busciglio Smiles, we are happy to treat adult patients who are considering orthodontic care for the first time, as well as those who had treatment as a child but have experienced teeth shifting. We believe it’s never too late to achieve the smile of your dreams.

And it’s never been easier! Adults have more treatment options than ever due to advancements in dental technology. These advancements make treatment more comfortable and allow us to achieve the same results we would have if we’d treated the patient during their childhood years.

Orthodontic Treatment Options

At Busciglio Smiles, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Each patient is unique and has distinctive needs. The treatment plans we create reflect that.

To ensure our patients receive the very best orthodontic treatment in Plant City, we offer a variety of treatment options. We will work with the patient to determine which option works best for their needs and desires.

Traditional Braces

You’re probably most familiar with these types of braces. They’re the ones often featured in films and images and associated with what it means to get braces.

Traditional braces are made up of three components:

  • Metal brackets
  • A metal archwire
  • Rubber bands

The metal brackets are bonded to the front surface (the lip and cheek side) of each tooth. In the center of each bracket is an indentation where the archwire sits. The archwire helps guide the teeth into their new and proper positions. The brackets hold the archwire in place. The rubber bands fit around each bracket to secure the archwire.

Though not considered the most aesthetically pleasing option, traditional braces are still a popular choice because they provide optimal results – especially in particularly complex cases.

The average timeline for traditional metal braces in Plant City is between 18 and 24 months. During that time, patients need to see their orthodontist every four to six weeks. At the check-up appointment, the dentist will:

  • Replace worn rubber bands
  • Address any issues causing pain or discomfort
  • Add spacers if necessary
  • Tighten the archwire so it continues to exert gentle pressure, so your teeth continue to shift

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are like traditional metal braces in that they’re made up of the same components. The difference is that the brackets are made of ceramic, the archwire is clear, and we can use white or clear rubber bands, though some people still enjoy having rubber bands in their favorite colors.

These “clear” braces are made of strong materials and will last the duration of treatment.

The most obvious benefit is that this is a discrete option for teens and adults who want to avoid drawing too much attention. Patients who have more complex orthodontic cases can benefit from these types of braces, while still enjoying better aesthetics.

Invisalign® Clear Aligners

One of the most popular options for teens and adults is Invisalign® clear aligners. Invisalign® in Plant City is a safe, fast, affordable option for patients who have less complicated orthodontic needs.

Clear aligners are made using durable plastic that is vacuum-formed to plaster models of the patient’s teeth. The Invisalign® company creates a variety of models that show the patient’s teeth in various stages of shifting progression. Aligners are fabricated on those models and delivered to the patient every few weeks.

The new aligners feel tighter and create the same gentle shifting pressure that a patient in traditional braces gets when they go in for a check-up/adjustment appointment.

Besides aesthetics, another benefit of Invisalign® is that the treatment time averages 12 to 18 months.

Self-Ligating Braces

This option looks and feels like traditional braces. The difference is that self-ligating braces have spring-loaded “doors” that open so we can place the archwire. Then, we close the “doors” around the archwire.

The benefits of self-ligating braces in Plant City are that they:

  • Don’t require rubber bands (which can break over time)
  • Do not require tightening by your orthodontist (they are self-tightening)
  • Allow for shorter orthodontic check-up appointments
  • Are similar in cost to traditional braces

What to Expect at Your First Visit

When you or your child first visit Busciglio Smiles, we’ll start by taking some diagnostic images:

  • A panoramic x-ray (which shows the teeth, sinuses, and bones)
  • Photographs of the teeth and how they align and what type of smile they create

Based on these images, your Plant City orthodontist will discuss your unique needs and provide you with some treatment options.

If you decide to proceed with treatment, we will take a complete set of diagnostic records, which include:

  • Scanning your teeth to create plaster models
  • Facial profile x-ray (cephalometric radiograph)
  • Various measurements of the teeth and occlusion issues (crossbite, overbite, underbite, etc.)

These records, as well as the diagnostics we gathered before the consultation, give us the information we need to create a customized treatment plan. We may take additional x-rays and digital scans to create new study models throughout the patient’s treatment to track their progress.
